Short-term Rentals | Letters To Editor | – Mount Desert Islander

To the Editor:

Last week’s article regarding the new vacation rental plan in Mount Desert states that short term rentals are divided between “residential renters” who live on the property and rent to offset expenses and “commercial renters” for whom the property is simply a source of income. I would like to point out that there is a not insubstantial third category: summer residents, many with non-winterized homes that cannot be their residence, who rent to offset expenses and for whom the property is not a source of income. The rentals are only to allow the family to keep and use their summer home.
